Concrete Dam Replacement at Lake Grimsel

Project: Concrete dam replacement Spitallamm (Allplan Engineering visualization)

Lake Grimsel was created by the Seeuferegg (gravity dam, 42 meters high) and Spitallamm (arch dam, 114 meters high) concrete dams completed in 1932. It has been known for some time that the Spitallam concrete dam has needed reconstruction. This is due to the steadily increasing separation of the structures between the downstream (air side) mass of concrete and the upstream (water side) face concrete, which is leading to an increasing deterioration of the structure's condition.

The challenge:

The new, double-curved arch dam is located on the downstream side in front of the existing wall and has approximately the same crown height. Its crown length measures 195 meters and the maximum height is 113 meters. This results in a concrete volume of 206,000 cubic meters. In the past, a total of 1,235,450 cubic meters of concrete was required to build the eight dams that are in operation. How do you plan a new concrete dam in a topographically challenging terrain with a variety of existing inlet and outlet tunnels?

“Thanks to the meticulously precise reworking of all existing plans in 3D and their combination with the digital terrain model, we were able to create the ideal conditions for adding the geometrically demanding new building objects in the 3D basic plan in the form of a double-curved wall with a parabolic arc,” explains Matthias Stähli.

A newcomer to the Frankfurt Skyline

Project: OMNITURM, Frankfurt am Main

The skyline of Frankfurt am Main is distinctive in Europe. Nine of the approximately 30 buildings— each over 100 meters in height—are among the ten tallest buildings in Germany. At that point, the OMNITURM will be the fifth-tallest building in Frankfurt at about 190 meters, and at the same time, the first truly mixed-use highrise in Germany, which will offer public spaces in addition to office and living space.

The challenge:

The ambitious construction project involved a number of challenges for Bollinger + Grohmann Engineers. For example, the OMNITURM foregoes the usual corner supports to offer its users unrestricted views from the popular corner rooms. Accordingly, in cooperation with BIG and B & V Braun Canton Architects, a support system had to be developed which manages without these structural members.

The development of the special support system without corner columns—including optimized geometry with respect to the support position and distortion in the section and plan views— was initially done with the help of parametric models in the software Rhino. A steel plant in 3D

Steel plant in Jizan/Saudi Arabia

In Jizan, Saudi Arabia, a new steel plant is under development. This ambitious project involves the creation of a “mini-mill“ – a modern and innovative steel plant where scrap steel is smelted to produce new steel in just two hours, at a production rate of 100 tons per hour. Once completed, this new production center will have an arc furnace, which is considered better than the traditional blast furnaces because it offers greater flexibility. It will also be a rolling mill with high-performance rolling equipment using state-of-the-art automation technology. The design of the rolling mill support structure was entrusted to Udine-based company Mangart, who have many years experience in designing industrial plants and steel mills.

The challenge:

Besides accurate cost estimating, the greatest challenge posed by projects like this is the implementation and execution of the individual construction phases. For example, with concrete support structures, the correct construction processes need to be taken into account whilst simultaneously avoiding errors that can arise due to the location of expansion joints, etc. With this project, the general arrangement and reinforcement design required particularly vigilant attention.

Titans in the desert sands

Dry Dock in Duqm Port, Oman

The construction boom on the Arabian Peninsula has reached another country: Oman. The Sultanate, from which Sinbad the Sailor once set off on his famous journeys, wants to revive its seafaring tradition and is developing several coastal areas into new port zones. One of these is Duqm Port, in the south of the country. Close to international shipping lines but also far from the notorious Strait of Hormuz, this desert-like region is to be developed into a new port with an adjoining industrial zone. The core of the new development will be two gigantic, 1,350-foot (410 meter) dry docks capable of servicing supertankers with a load capacity of up to 350,000 metric tons.

The challenge:

The gigantic dimensions of the project alone make it a real challenge. The two mighty dry docks and an appropriately large pump station are just one part of the project. The 250-acre (100-hectare) area will also have various dockyard and crane installations, deep water anchorages, storage areas, accommodation and office buildings, a quay wall nearly 2 miles (3 kilometers) long and an offshore breakwater. The project is also challenging because it must be completed particularly quickly. According to the Omani government, the entire installation needs to be ready in just three years.

The solution:

So a particularly large project had to be planned with no errors in a very short period of time. Man the Pumps!

Pumping station Katwijk, Netherlands

Built in 1954, the pumping station in Katwijk can currently transport 54 cubic meters of water per second, which corresponds to a volume of a room of around 4 by 5 meters. Even though the plant already offers impressive output, it no longer meets future requirements. In an expansion measure, the output of the pumping station will be increased to 94 m3/s and thus almost doubled – on the one hand by upgrading the three existing pumps from diesel to electric motors, but primarily through the construction of an additional, fourth pump unit.

The challenge:

The building, the details of which were designed by Tauw based on the basic draft by architects Aletta van Aalst & Partners, has a whole series of unusual building elements. For example, in addition to the trapezoidal exterior walls of the new pump housing, there is a cylinder-shaped trough, in which the rotors of the pump move, a pump gear and round flow openings out of which the water flows. The building also has elliptical platforms on which the cleaning cranes the for the dirt collection grate will later be mounted. These are all complex forms that are difficult to cope with in 2D. Integrated 3D planning on a virtual building model as propagated by the BIM principle was exactly the right solution for a project of this complexity.

The solution:

In a first step, a complete 3D model of the new building and adjacent parts of the existing pumping station was created. The basis for this was two-dimensional plan data from the architects, which was imported to Allplan in DWG format, and scanned plans of the existing pumping station. Hydroelectric power plant Middle Marsyangdi, Nepal

The construction of the Middle Marsyangdi Power Plant in the Lamjung District of Nepal (around 170 km west of Kathmandu) has made it possible to utilise the country's central hydro power resources. Klaus Klafke, Project Manager at DYWIDAG International GmbH, relied upon Allplan Engineering for the planning phase of this major project.

The challenge:

One of the challenges during the construction of the Middle Marsyangdi Power Plant was presented by working in the steep, narrow valley as Klaus Klafke recalls: “Key components of the power station were installed underground. The fact that the substrate consisted of fragile rock only became apparent once construction had begun. This had a major impact on plans, which often had to be revised accordingly or even completely abandoned in some cases.“

Four-track extension between Olten and Aarau (Eppenberg Tunnel), Switzerland

By the end of 2021, the four-track extension of the Olten-Aarau route is expected to relieve one of the most severe bottlenecks on the east-west axis of the Swiss rail network. The project, costing CHF 855 million, includes expansions in the east of Olten, a fourth 2.5-kilometer-long track between Dulliken and Däniken and – as the core element – the double-track, three-kilometer-long Eppenberg Tunnel and comprehensive measures for its connection.

How are several thousand anchors in a geometrically complex excavation pit at a very narrow offset between axles and with holes at many different angles planned in an efficient manner, and how is it ensured that no collisions occur under the holes? Challenging Access

Access Structures, The Circle, Zurich Airport, Switzerland

With a total investment cost of around CHF 1 billion, at the foot of the Butzenbüel hill and within walking distance of the terminal, a high-quality superstructure for services is emerging that will provide a usable area of 180,000 square meters. The first and second stages are expected to be completed at the end of 2018 and in 2019 respectively.

The challenge:

Centering for the construction of the central ramp bridge was a major challenge during spatial positioning. According to the current state of planning, this ramp bridge is located in close proximity to a planned protection platform over the Butzenbüelring, which will be necessary to construct the building’s partly overhanging facade. The central ramp bridge also crosses over one point of the current exit from the airport drop-off area at a very oblique angle.

The Groundbreaking Tunnel

Gotthard Base Tunnel, Switzerland

The scheduled commissioning on December 11, 2016, marked the end of the project of the century – the Gotthard Base Tunnel – after nearly 20 years of building time. Its route length of 57 kilometers through the Saint-Gotthard Massif between Erstfeld and Bodio makes the Gotthard Base Tunnel the longest rail tunnel in the world.

The challenge:

The entire base tunnel, including cross-passages and multifunction stations, is double-walled. After the excavation support, a seal and an insituconcrete tunnel lining were installed. In the Erstfeld and Amsteg sections, the contractor used three formwork units, each with two 10-meterlong formwork carriages, for the cladding and tunnel lining. In an ultimate feat of logistics, up to 60 meters of cladding was concreted per day. That is to say, for every ten months of building time, over 22 kilometers of tunnel lining were laid per tube.

Three centuries of bridge building over the Firth of Forth

The Queensferry Crossing near Edinburgh in Scotland is a cablestayed bridge with three pylons over 200 m in height. It is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe and benefitted from ultramodern reinforcement planning in 3D thanks to the engineers from Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner (LAP) and Allplan Engineering.

Function and design – XXL

Sava Bridge, Belgrade / Serbia

Belgrade lies at the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. For years, expansion of the northern suburbs of the city has been hindered by the limited capacity of the three existing bridges over the Sava: the Brankov most, Savski most, and Gazela. In order to expand the capacity of the transport network, a fourth bridge is currently being built over the Sava.

The challenge:

The project is a complex one, and not only because of the dimensions involved. In order to ensure uninterrupted shipping movements during the construction period, the main section spanning the Sava must be erected in the river without temporary supports. In addition, construction will be going ahead on different sections simultaneously. The side section, for example, will be erected parallel to the main bridge, yet independently of it.

There is more behind the “campus bridge” than the pure avoidance of stopping traffic. The new university campus Hubland North is located on a former US military base: the Leighton area. After the US forces left this in 2009, the state of Bavaria purchased part of the land for the University of Würzburg and had parts of the former military facility converted for university use.

The challenge:

The new run-of-the-river power plant on the Iller river at Kempten impresses the viewer with its dynamic, elegant form. The almost 100 meter long sculptural shell conjures up numerous associations: from whales or waves through to polished boulders. The power plant replaces a building from the 1950s and currently supplies around 4,000 households with a capacity of around 14 gigawatt hours per year.

A2 Freeway, Stansstad-Beckenried, Switzerland

For all those involved in the project, repairs to the 12-kilometer section of the A2 freeway between Stansstad and Beckenried is a particular challenge. Between 2013 and 2017, the section of road, which has been in use for 40 years, will be redeveloped in three construction stages at a cost of around 278 million francs.

Aare bridge, Olten (SO) Switzerland

Olten has a new landmark: the Aare Bridge, which was given over to traffic in April 2013 as part of the "Olten Region Relief" (Entlastung Region Olten, ERO) project. The Dutch in Nijmegen reveal just how sustainable and pioneering flood protection can be with an impressive project. Just across the border from Germany in the Lower Rhine, Europe's largest flood protection project is under construction. It is called "Ruimte voor de Waal" – literally "more room for the Waal" – and is intended to create more space for the biggest river in the Netherlands, the Waal.

The new Kaeng Krachan Elephant Park at Zurich Zoo is a fine example of the international change taking place in zoo philosophy: More space for elephants, more proximity for visitors. The new home for a family of eight elephants extends over an area of more than 11,000 m². This is approximately six times the size of the old facility and provides the animals with more space, more family life and more room for movement.

Airbus Production Hall, Stade, Germany

The various parts of the aircraft are being prefabricated in different locations across Europe to then be assembled in the delivery center in Toulouse, France. In Stade, SHI Planungsgesellschaft mbH (SHI) the Oldenburg-based urban planning, structural and civil engineering company built a modern production hall for a single aircraft component – a 17 meter long, 4 meter wide fuselage shell. The company used the CAD platform Allplan, installed on 25 workstations, to design the hall.

The challenge:

In addition to the sustainability requirements, the design company also had to overcome a number of logistical hurdles during construction of the hall. For example, a crane and a shuttle system had to be fitted in the hall in order to handle large components.

A building which houses modern and contemporary art must, itself also, satisfy certain artistic demands. And this is certainly the case at the Pompidou Art Center in Metz: The architects were inspired by the straw hats of japanese rice farmers. This new home for art represents a milestone in the field of architecture and faced structural engineers with a number of challenges. They were solved with Allplan Engineering.

The challenge:

The groundbreaking nature of the building, which was inspired by the image of a rice farmer‘s straw hat, made the structural design a particular challenge: Firstly, the three materials – metal, wood and concrete had to be combined and their static interdependently taken into account. And secondly, the architectural design was very complex due to the optically individual, yet statically overlapping interwoven elements.

The solution:

Two dimensional planning was not sufficient for the challenges of this project, as the complexity of the intersections and the connection points, as well as the high degree of reinforcement required, made 3D tools vital for the reinforcement planning. The interactive functionality of Allplan Engineering provided support in this respect to the CHP planners: depending on requirements, the CAD designers could work with floor plans, isometrics, views and sections in order to create the spatial model. Harrer Chocolate Factory, Sopron, Hungary

One excellent example of a timelessly elegant building that deserves the description “work of art“ is the Harrer chocolate factory located in Sopron, Hungary - specifically a three-story chocolate factory with office and shop.

The challenge:

There were many technical obstacles to overcome, particularly during shell planning. As the construction site previously contained the clay pit of a brickyard, the engineers were required to develop a sophisticated foundation. A five to seven meter thick, non-tight filling layer meant a pile foundation was necessary for the project.

Setting the tone with ALLPLAN

Helsinki Music Centre, Helsinki, Finland

Finland, a country which has given the world many famous musicians and composers, is known as the land of music. However, the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, designed by Alvar Aalto in the 1970‘s, exhibits some serious acoustic drawbacks. This situation should soon be remedied. The Helsinki Music Centre – a new concert hall with sophisticated acoustics – has now opened in the Finnish capital.

The challenge:

When the Vahanen Engineering firm, located in Helsinki, took on the contract for the Helsinki Music Centre, the client had only one condition: project realization should be achieved on the basis of building information modeling. This would ensure that the building met requirements with regard to its design, its function, the costs and deadlines.

The solution:

Vahanen has been utilizing Allplan for the last five years. The engineering company now has seven Allplan Architecture licenses and two Allplan Engineering licenses which were used for the building design, as well as general arrangement and reinforcement design for the Music Centre contract. Musiktheater Graz, Austria

The Austrian Federal Real Estate Company (BIG or Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft in German) commissioned the construction of a building for music and musical theatre (or Mumuth for short) for the Graz University of Music and Performing Arts. Planning activities for the building began in 2005. “The planning phase presented us with a few problems. The Mumuth proved to be extremely complex in many respects, including the supporting structure system, the building equipment, the building physics and the facade.

The challenge:

One particular challenge during planning was posed by the ‘Twist,‘ a freely defined spiral element which is the central component of the supporting structure in the foyer. This steel and concrete composite structure begins on the ground floor and spirals upwards through the first and second floors before merging with the ceiling above the second floor.

The solution:

Because the entire geometry consists of free forms, also known as non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS), it was not possible to simply replicate the Twist in a 3D model without further ado. Consulting center of Rabobank in Roermond, Netherlands

The inspiration for this building, designed by architecture firm Engelman Architecten in Roermond, was a work by American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. The work of art evokes a snake whose outstretched neck and head reach high into the sky. The architects turned this idea into a two-story building at the end of which a seven-floor tower boldly extends diagonally

The challenge:

In addition to the fact that the sculptural form required an extremely innovative approach for a correct calculation of the main load-bearing structure, another major challenge was ensuring the dimensional accuracy of the precast parts and assembly drawings.

For engineers to retain an overview in a project the size of Orchidea Tower in Bucharest, with 19 stories above ground and 3 below, working with 3D models is practically a must.

The challenge:

Planning was made more problematic by the difficult structural conditions: on the one hand because of the poor quality of the ground close to the river, but above all because of the risk of earthquakes, which had to be taken into consideration in the calculations.
