Winners of the 5th Baumeister student competition come from RWTH Aachen and TU Munich

Heightening and expanding – convincing arguments for this were to be provided on a selected building of choice and the improvements documented in a design. 266 students from 16 universities rose to the challenge. As no location was specified for the task, each university could interpret it individually. Participants had to find an existing building to which they were to add value from an urban planning, economical or aesthetic point of view by making it higher. This therefore involved identifying the potential of existing architecture.

The building would then be extended or changed, or parts of it removed. The jury consisted of: Jury president Dr. Matthias Castorph (Götz Castorph Architekten und Stadtplaner); Philipp Auer (Auer+Weber+Assoziierte); Susanna Knopp (4architekten); Lorenz Lachauer (Nemetschek Allplan Systems); Mauritz Lüps (Atelier Lüps); Sabine Schneider (Baumeister). This year, the jury decided against ranking the winners. Instead, they stressed those aspects of the winners’ work that they felt were particularly successfully.

The winners are:
- “Residential” category: Barbara Trojer, Markus Munzig, Cosima Krubasik from TU Munich for “Three houses under one roof”
- “Public Building” category: Patrick Knüppe from RWTH Aachen for “Kurienhaus on Roncalliplatz in Cologne”
- “Conversion” category: Thomas Haber from RWTH Aachen for “Tauchbunker”

An accolade and a prize of EUR 250 went to:
- Janna Lane and Jan Hendrik Lorenzen, Lübeck University of Applied Sciences for “Storage Shed on Lübeck’s Wall Peninsula”
- Felix Broer, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences for “Art Bunker on Phönix Lake”
- Ömer Acar and Xi Li, TU Berlin for “Hostel on Müggelturm Site in Köpenick”

The Baumeister student competition is continually supported by NEMETSCHEK Allplan. For the past five years in succession, it has shown what is being taught and achieved in Germany’s architecture faculties. Bachelor students compete with master students, universities of applied sciences with traditional universities. Students are supported by lecturers who use a wide range of teaching methods.

The award-winning projects can be seen in an exhibition of the foyer of the Nemetschek building in Munich up until May 13, 2014.
